Lydia is not just a subject — she is a life lived in quiet devotion. A woman who spent her days caring for others: raising children that were not her own, tending homes that were not hers. She was one of the women who raised my partner, in the absence of his mother — a steady, nurturing presence.

Her gaze, captured here in deep blue tones, holds both resilience and resignation. It speaks of dignity in hardship, of love given freely, and of endurance without recognition. Lydia lives today in Peru, in a tiny room shared with her pregnant daughter — a bed for two, one closet, and holes in the floor. Still, she endures. Still, she gives.

This painting is a tribute — to her, and to the many women like her.
